A few months ago, I wrote a blog entry about Finding Out How I Might be Psychic. In it, I basically came out of the psychic closet and shared my story of how I came to find out about my abilities. Since then, I have gotten a lot of questions about intuition and how to hone one’s own psychic awareness. I will try to cover them in this entry.
When I was 16, I met with a medicine man who explained ESP (extrasensory perception) in this way: we have 5 physical senses. There’s is sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Then, there are the ESP senses, which is extrasensory perceived sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. Most of us come to know and understand the world based on experiences involving our basic five senses. Extrasensory perception is the ability to acquire knowledge and understanding of information without using our senses to physically experience life… but it is the ability to access this information through thought and intuition as if we had lived it ourselves. For example, someone may be able to “see” in a traffic accident happening before it occurs (but in their mind, it’s as if they actually saw it with their physical eyes). This is called clairvoyance. With this ability, this person can choose a different route home to avoid the accident. I took a class recently by Grace Cloyd who explained psychic abilities as the “Clair-senses.”
Clair- Senses.
Clairvoyance, as I mentioned earlier, is being able to intuitively see.
Clairaudience, intuitively hear.
Clairsentience, intuitively feel.
Clairalience/clairfactance, intuitively smell.
Clairgustance, intuitively taste.
There is one more: Claircognizance, intuitively know. It’s like that gut feeling you get. But it also works as Grace describes it, “Thought bubbles that pop into your brain that are not your own thoughts.” It’s knowing without the use of any senses, physical or extrasensory.
A person who is considered psychic may have one or more of these abilities (some stronger than others). I have clairvoyance, claircognizance, clairaudience (a little), and apparently (I’ve been told), clairalience. What is the use of clairalience? Well, if I wanted to astral travel into your bathroom because I was curious as to what kind of handsoap you used, I would employ clairalience. But don’t ask me to do this. LOL. Or ask me to do this, see if I’m any good. Ha! (More on clair-senses here.)
So each one of us is born with an innate sense of intuition. The depth and degree we are connected to our ability will differ from person to person. This can be attributed to heredity, upbringing, and culture. It is often noticed that children are more connected to their abilities because culture and upbringing have yet to play a role in restricting them.
My friend had been trying to conceive through IVF a couple years ago. She found out she was pregnant, but the embryo did not carry fully to term. Before she shared the news of the miscarriage with anyone, her three-year-old child said to her, “My brother is not inside your tummy anymore, is he, Mommy?” How did this child know about the miscarriage? How did they know it was going to be a boy? Could the child see the spirit of the embryo?
Often times, when children tell adults that they have visions or hear things adults cannot, the children are discredited. “You don’t see anything. Stop pretending,” adults may say. What if the child really did see the spirit of the embryo and had clairvoyance? Could the child then use his clairvoyance to communicate with the spirit? This brings me to the topic of psychic modalities. Psychic modalities, as I see it, is a way to use one or more of your abilities. Communicating with a spirit is called mediumship.
Here are examples of more psychic modalities:
Telepathy: being able to transfer thoughts or communicate mentally.
Aura Reading: the ability to perceive someone’s aura using one of the clair-senses.
Psychometry: the ability to obtain information about something or someone by the use of physical touch. For example, Tyler Henry, the Hollywood Medium, uses this modality in combination with clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairsentience to communicate with spirits on the other side.
Astral Travel: I mentioned this earlier. It’s the ability to take an out of body journey to experience life through your clair-senses in other places, realms, or dimensions. What? Other dimensions?! Yes! But more on that another day.

FAQ’s
How do I know I am psychic?
If you any of the clair-senses are strong within you, chances are, you have psychic abilities too. If you know something, but can’t explain it. If you see something before it will happen or have multiple feelings of deja-vu, you may be psychic too. (More questions to ask yourself to see if you are psychic, here.) Another way to tell… The same way that athletic ability or predisposition to certain ailments are hereditary, psychic abilities can run in the family.
How can I develop my psychic abilities?
Meditation is key. The medicine man I met with in Thailand taught me how to tap into my clairvoyance by tuning into aspects of my perception using meditation. Tuning into your psychic abilities mean being more aware of your perceptions. And to do that well, one must be able to quiet the mind of cluttered thoughts and focus on these depth perceptions.
Something I’ve noticed about psychic abilities is they are heightened when I am more in alignment with my purpose. If I am stressed out about a situation in my life, can’t see my way out, or I’m doing something that isn’t true to who I am, I have a harder time connecting to these abilities.
You can also take a class to develop your psychic abilities. I took a series of classes with Wendy Gayle. She is a psychic and channeler. We did some meditation and psychic exercises where I connected with spirit guides and angels to obtain information from a higher vibration. It was really cool. We also did a third-eye activation. These can be done through psychic healing modalities or meditations like this one. Note: if you are curious about developing your psychic abilities, it will come with certain responsibilities. You may be called to help people or do things out of your comfort zone for the greater good.
Why would I want to develop these abilities?
You may have been born with an ability to play musical instruments beautifully. But what if you had an ability, but did not share it with others? I have a feeling that we are gifted certain innate abilities at birth. Whether we choose to hone them and share them with the world is up to us. What I have had to ask myself recently is, “If I have a gift and I’m hiding it, not telling anyone about it, and pretending it doesn’t exist, am I limiting myself? Am I doing myself any favors? Why am I hiding?” When I opened up about my abilities, I felt so much freer. I felt more in line with my purpose. I felt like I’m supposed to help people with my abilities and yes, I’ve also had to step out of my comfort zone. Ooh! I have a really cool story. I’ll write that next.
What if I’m psychic and I don’t want to be? Can I turn off these abilities?
The medicine man I met with explained psychic abilities, similar to a light dimmer. You can turn it on to varying degrees. You can shut it off if you want to, suppress it, or you can avoid it and pretend it doesn’t exist. What commonly happens is, you’re on light is on, but you don’t know where the dimmer switch is. So you are on all the time or without your control! The situations in your life become the control, not you. This can be frightening to someone who is coming into their own abilities. I have a friend whose mother sees spirits. She doesn’t want to because it’s too scary for her. So she goes to a Chinese herbalist to block her third-eye from activating.
Is this real?
I watched a video recently about how humans use up to 90% of their brain, where dolphins can access up to 97% of their brain. Dolphin brains are also larger and have more intricate lines and maps than human brains. They are able to access an extra lobe, which gives them greater sensory perception. They are able to send graphic images using their voice. If it were a human, it would be like telepathically sending someone an image using thought. If this an indication of what happens when humans are able to access more parts of their brains, we may find extrasensory perception more common as a result.
Indeed, I feel like having psychic abilities are a sign of the next step in human evolution. It’s already unfolding. I’m meeting more and more people are opening up about their psychic abilities. Those who are able to hone them, more often, are using their gifts to help others and heal the planet. It’s pretty magical and beautiful. With how the world is going right now, we definitely need more of that.
Oh yeah, here’s that video I was telling you about.
